A total of 100 players were nominated for the award, across Division II, Division III and NAIA. The list was narrowed to 49 finalists, and Ternes was one of only 21 from Division III. He was also the only finalist from the Midwest Conference.
Ternes finished the season as the conference leader with 13.0 tackles per game. He also recorded 7.5 tackles for a loss, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.
The winner of the Cliff Harris Award will be announced later this month, and honored at the Little Rock Touchdown Club in February.
