Grinnell College is seeing a 52% increase in applications for the Class of 2016, twice the improvement as any other school on this list, published by The New York Times Blog. And more than U of Chicago, Claremont-McKenna, Northwestern, Tufts, and Yale combined!

Also a USA Today story on the success of liberal-arts educated graduates over the rest of college graduates:
(The study) found that students who had mastered the ability to think critically, reason analytically and write effectively by their senior year were:

•Three times less likely to be unemployed than those who hadn't (3.1% vs. 9.6%).

•Half as likely to be living with their parents (18% vs. 35%).

•Far less likely to have amassed credit card debt (37% vs. 51%).

Three Pioneers Make Dean's List

A Note From Grinnell's President

On Monday, Grinnell College's President, Dr. Raynard Kington, posted an editorial in the Des Moines Register to clarify some misinformation about the College's tuition and financial aid packages:

The Jan. 8 Sunday Register story regarding the “list of things that will be more expensive in 2012” exemplifies the widespread misunderstanding about the published price of college tuition, room and board versus the much lower net price that most students actually pay.

At Grinnell College, thanks to generous financial aid policies, our price is “discounted” by an average of 64 percent because of college-funded aid and grants.

Only 15 percent of our students pay the full tuition, room and board. Overall, although our fees may be greater, Grinnell graduates have a much lower average debt ($18,578) than do graduates of either the University of Iowa ($27,391) or Iowa State University ($30,062), according to The Project on Student Debt .

Chris Jarmon Keeps Blogging!

Senior offensive guard Chris Jarmon is quasi-famous for his blog The D3 Experience where he wrote about playing small college athletics and his time at Grinnell, following his collegiate start at Colorado College.

Now Chris is at it again! He's started a new blog, Blind Side Blog, where he'll analyze and dissect the game of football from a lineman's perspective. For example, here's a part of his take on Monday night's BCS National Championship Game:

Everyone on the left side is still doing their job, but the right side is in DEFCON-1. The right tackle over-set his feet because he knew he had help to the inside, and he had to respect Hightower's outside rush speed. Now he's realizing his only help will come from the center, and the help won't make it in time. Jefferson has the bubble open, but it's well-covered and won't get enough yards for the first. He's looking for something deep to come open, but there isn't nearly enough time.

Gifts From Pioneer Football!

Last year Grinnell Football raised $324 for the Susan G Komen Fund to support breast cancer research. In 2011, the Pioneers continue to be in the giving spirit.

We recently donated $275 to deliver youth sports equipment, primarily soccer balls and volleyballs, to a high school in Sabce, Burkina Faso. We are providing support for the work started by former Grinnell citizen Wendy Munyon, who has joined the Peace Corps and is teaching in Sabce. Right now the group of Grinnell College students and faculty, led by Judy Hunter, are the only source of athletic equipment for the schools in Sabce.

A group of 53 D-III college seniors currently enjoying the sunny climate of Mexico’s Free and Sovereign State Puebla thought their exit from the playoffs or last game of the regular season was the final time they would strap on the pads and helmet.

Then, as the realization that competitive football was suddenly and abruptly in their past, an invitation arrived to play in one more game south of the border.

On Saturday, standouts from 28 schools will fire up that competitive spirit once again to compete in the Tazón de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) in Puebla as members of Team Stars & Stripes. Some might well follow in the footsteps of the game’s alumni from its time as the Aztec Bowl and emulate the likes of London Fletcher, Fred Jackson and Jason Trusnik in heading to the NFL. But for the majority, this will be an enjoyable and memorable way to bring down the curtain on their football career.

Seer Set to Play in D3 Senior Classic!

Robert Seer ’12, who has earned numerous honors in his Grinnell College football career, has another achievement to add to that list.

The 6-3, 205-pound wide receiver from Saukville, Wis. (Port Washington) will play in the third annual D3 Senior Classic All-Star Game in Salem, Va., on Friday.

Division III seniors nationwide were selected to participate based on their performance during their senior year. The game, presented by the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL), will give pro scouts a chance to size up small school talent as the nation’s best Division III seniors battle in a head-to-head North vs. South contest. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Central time.

Fans will have two options to watch the action. Television coverage will be available on Fox College Sports. Fans may choose to watch from on their computer by logging on to http://www.knoxivi.com/.

This past Sunday night, the 2011 Grinnell Pioneer football team gathered together for one final time at the team banquet. Along with great desserts (provided by Missy Dostal) and some bad jokes, the 2011 Pioneer football awards were announced.

Chris Jarmon Named All-Region!

Pioneer left guard Chris Jarmon ’12 has been named to the D3football.com All-West Region Team.
Jarmon, from Boulder, Colo. (Boulder), was a third-team selection.

He was earlier named to the All-Midwest Conference Team for the second time while anchoring an offensive line that passed for more than 3,000 yards, second-best in the league.

Jarmon was also recently named to the Academic All-District first team and selected as a candidate for the National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award.

Grinnell Hoopster Scores Record 89 Points in One Game!

Grinnell College junior, Griffin Lentsch '13, scored an NCAA Division III record 89 points in the Pioneers 145-97 win over Principia College. The point total tops former Grinnell College star, Jeff Clement, who held the previous D3 record with 77. Lentsch's 89 puts him 3rd all-time in all divisions of college basketball!

The Pioneer men are off to a 4-0 start on the season and host the conference opener this Friday against defending MWC champs St. Norbert.

Granera and Seer Selected to Play All-Star Game in Mexico!

Grinnell College’s Robert Seer ’12 (left) and Logan Granera ‘12 (right) have been chosen by a panel of NCAA Division III football coaches to represent Team Stars & Stripes in the third annual Tázon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars).

The D-III All-Star team’s contest against the CONADEIP All-Stars from Mexico is slated for Dec. 17 at El Tempo del Dolor (The Temple of Pain) in Puebla, Mexico.

Seer, a 6-3, 205-pound wide receiver, was recently named to the All-Midwest Conference Team for the third time in his career. He established Grinnell career records for touchdown receptions (46), receptions (232) and receiving yards (3,262) while tying the school mark for receptions in a season (84). In 2011, he ranked second in the conference in receptions and scoring (108 points) and was fourth in receiving yards (1,152). For his career, he ranks in the top five in the MWC in four categories.

Granera, a 5-11, 185-pound wide receiver, has also earned All-MWC honors during his time at Grinnell. He was second on the Pioneers in receiving with 55 catches for 676 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned punts and kickoffs, punted and made a pair of field goals.

Three Grinnell College players have been named to the 2011 All-Midwest Conference Football Team.
Earning second-team honors were wide receiver Robert Seer ’12, left guard Chris Jarmon ’12 and defensive end Brian Taylor ’13 .

Seer (left), a three-time All-MWC selection, established Grinnell career records for touchdown receptions (46), receptions (232) and receiving yards (3,262) while tying the school mark for receptions in a season (84). Jarmon and Blumberg Named Academic All-District!

Grinnell College safety Drew Blumberg ’13 and left guard Chris Jarmon ’12 have been named to the District 8 NCAA Division III Academic All-District football first team.

The award is presented by Capital One and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). By being named to the first team, Jarmon and Blumberg are eligible for Academic All-America honors.

Jarmon is an English major from Boulder, Colo. (Boulder) with a 3.68 GPA, while Blumberg is a biological chemistry major from Bishop, Calif. (Bishop Union) boasting a 3.75 GPA.

College Is Cheaper Than You Think!

"What has been buried in much of the resulting coverage is that while colleges’ published tuition and fees have indeed increased, these so-called “sticker prices” are not all that informative. For the average full-time student, net tuition – which subtracts grants and tax-based aid – is less than half of the published price at private nonprofit four-year schools."

Grinnell College prides itself on its promise to meet 100% of demonstrated financial aid combined with a yearly loan cap of $2,250, which means that most of the financial aid awarded comes from scholarships and grants and is not required to be paid back by the student!

Yahoo! Finance listed Grinnell as one of the top 10 value colleges in the country noting the College's average grants/scholarships package is $30,577!

Pioneers Fall in Season Finale

It was Senior Day and the Season Finale this past Saturday at Rosenbloom Field and the host Pioneers fell short against the visitors from Carroll University, 31-21.

Despite gaining more total yardage (403-282) and winning the turnover battle (3-1), Grinnell wasn't able to over come the field position battle and fell behind early before the late rally fell short.

Offensively, Robert Seer '12 and Logan Granera '12, one last time, paced the Scarlet & Black with a combined 256 yards receiving and 1 TD among their 14 catches.

Defensively, the Pioneers were about as balanced as possible. Drew Blumberg '13 led the unit with 11 tackles, but 10 players had at least 5 tackles AND at least .5 TFL. The Pioneers also had 2 INT (Andrew Clark '14 and Max Keller '14).

The Pioneers finish the 2011 campaign at 5-5 (4-5 in MWC) good for 6th in the league. The last two seasons have been the most successful back-to-back years since the 1999-2000 seasons that combined for 12 victories.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?
I came on a visit for the academics and football game against St Norbert back in 2008, having heard very little about Grinnell. I fell in love Grinnell immediately, bringing me to apply early decision and make my choice.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?

Beating Monmouth at Monmouth our junior year who was ranked 14th preseason.

Plans after graduation?
Medical School, and eventually be a Orthopedic Surgeon, fixing all the injuries my teamates and I have sustained through the years... well maybe not myself, i fear that may be unethical.

Favorite Professional Sports Team:
Denver Broncos! Especially when they are winning back to back Superbowls

Favorite Division I team:
Colorado Buffaloes Football, especially remembering back when we beat Nebraska bad during thanksgiving when their Heisman winner didn't stop us from stomping them.

Favorite Song/Book/Movie/Food:
While having many songs I am a fan of from a variety of genres, my favorite book may be Deception Point. My favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption, gotta love Morgan Freeman. For food I enjoy a plethora of meals, however who doesn't enjoy a good juicy half lb burger with a tomato thinly sliced with a toasted bun and melted cheddar cheese on top... dill pickle spear on the side, with a big plate of perfect sweet potato fries spiced with a hint of ginger and allspice, all with a side of ranch of course.

Favorite Course at Grinnell:

Animal Physiology was quite interesting and I enjoyed it despite being quite difficult.

Interesting facts about you:

I enjoy long walks on the beach during sunset, a nice glass of wine, fine art... but seriously, Hiking, biking, the mountains! (mountains of colorado of course), and just doing amazing things and seeing beautiful sights! Life is fun!

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?

Grinnell gave me the opportunity to receive a top notch education and continue what I love doing which is playing football. Note to mention, the financial assistance they presented me was also lovely. When I came to visit on my recruiting visit, I was sold on the “Self-Gov” policy that people went by here which was definitely a culture shock and the great athletic facilities. Deciding between the corn fields and Cali weather was definitely a hard decision, but I think I made the right decision. Grinnell has allowed for me to get out of Cali, and do something that nobody back home is doing.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?

My favorite Pioneer football moment would definitely have to be the win over Monmouth last year. The upset was set up so well. It was their homecoming (or something like it), it would have been a milestone victory (100^th career victory) for their head coach, we hadn’t scored on them in 3 years, their fans were talking a lot of trash, and the “icing on the cake” (like Creps would say) would be the fact that it was my birthday. Not only did we obviously score on them, but we came out there…on their home field, played hard and left with a big DUB. Everybody was so happy; the look on the Coach P’s face captivated everything. The bus ride home was probably the shortest ever because everybody was just having a good time. We pulled up at Grinnell to peers popping bottles and having a great time.

Plans after graduation?

Wherever the Lord takes me.

Grinnell Loses on Road, Seer Breaks Two More Records!

Some days just aren't your days. This Saturday was one of those for the Grinnell Pioneers. Facing the 2nd best team in the conference on the road, certainly proved a tough task, but everything that could go wrong did, and the Scarlet & Black fell 48-16.

Robert Seer '12 hauls in one of his school record catches

Senior wide receiver Rob Seer '12 continued his assault on the Grinnell record books, vaulting into the top place all-time in receptions (223) and receiving yards (3,144) to go with the career receiving TDs (42) record he overtook two weeks ago. It's now without doubt, that he is the most prolific wide receiver in Pioneer football history! Congrats Rob!

Kelsey Davis ’12 and Colton Feller ’14 both had 12 tackles to lead the defense, while Brian Taylor ’13 added 10 tackles with 2.5 sacks and a safety.

Max Jacobson '14 blocked yet another PAT attempt, making it the fourth PAT or FG attempt he's prevented from going through the uprights this season tying the Grinnell single-season mark.

Grinnell falls to 5-4 overall (4-4 in MWC) and plays host to Carroll University (6-3, 5-3 MWC) this Saturday for the season finale and Senior Day at Rosenbloom Field! Hope to see you there!

Major: History

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?
I chose to attend Grinnell after coming and doing an overnight stay. What sold me was actually meeting the people here including my potential teammates. Everyone at Grinnell is super nice and the guys on the team are awesome to hang out with. I couldn't ask to have better friends.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?
My favorite Pioneer football moment has to be beating Monmouth, as I'm sure it is for a lot of guys. More specifically though it was the very end when we got to use our victory formation. I remember going onto the field in near disbelief saying to some of the guys, "We are taking knees on Monmouth!" That was a good feeling.

Plans after graduation?
I would like to go law school after graduation, where I want to go depends on where I get in. Probably either Madison or Marquette.

Favorite Professional Sports Team:
By far the Green Bay Packers. Being a Packers fan is like nothing else. No fan base has more commitment to their team. We are all die hard. Going to a Packers game is as near to a religious experience as you can get. Oh, and by the way, we just beat the Bears at Soldier Field for the NFC Championship, and then won the Super Bowl, take that Jimmy.

Favorite Division I team:

No surpise, the Wisconsin Badgers. Not a glamorous school by any means, but somehow the Badgers are always competing for the championship in both football and basketball. Being on the field after they beat Northwestern 70-17 was another good memory, as the Badgers were on their way to the Rose Bowl. On Wisconsin!

Favorite Song:

Any country music, because the lyrics are actually meaningful and applicable to life. I realize there are a lot of haters, but country music rocks, if you don't believe me, go to Country Thunder, the greatest place in the world for four days in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin.

Favorite Food:

Probably a well-marinated and cooked steak. Also anything with lots of cheese.

Favorite Course at Grinnell:

My history seminar. It was titled Family History as American History. Basically, I got to interview my grandpa about his entire life and figure out when major historical events impacted his personal life. I wrote what was more or less a short biography filled with these interaction points. I learned a ton about my grandpa that I hadn't known, including the fact that he had worked on the guidance system for the Apollo missions. Pretty cool stuff.

Interesting facts about you:

I really enjoy singing and I sing here at Grinnell in the student-run male acapella group called the G-Tones. We sing pretty much anything and really have a lot of fun together. We aren't the best, but people are still really supportive. Definitely nice to be involved here at Grinnell.

Pioneers Drop Close Contest!

In a closely contested game the entire way, the host Pioneers lost to the visitors from St. Norbert 30-28 on Saturday. Both offenses put up close to 500 total yards, but turnovers proved to be costly, as Grinnell offered up the football back to the Green Knights on 4 different occasions.

Robert Seer '12 had another massive day for the Scarlet & Black with 14 receptions for 204 yards and 3 TDs. Quarterback Mike McCabe '13 threw for 470 yards, which was good for 2nd most all-time in Grinnell history, and 4 touchdowns.

Defensively, safety Drew Blumberg '13 had 13 tackles and a pass break-up while his safety counterpart, Kelsey Davis '12 added 8 tackles and his own pass break-up.

Max Jacobson '14 continued to impress in the kicking game, blocking his third kick of the season, this one a 30 yard 3rd quarter attempt from St Norbert.

Grinnell's four game-win streak is snapped and falls to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in MWC play and is tied for 5th place. St Norbert is now 5-3 overall as well but sits at 5-2 in the MWC.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?
Being at Grinnell gives me the opportunity to pursue a wide open academic curriculum, while at the same time being a part of an extremely close-knit football team. Also, the location was ideal, allowing me to get away from home a bit, but close enough to make coming home for holidays relatively easy. Plus, I get to hang out with a wide variety of characters, ranging from the calm, collected Chris Jarmon to the fiery, dragon-like Robert Seer.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?
Without a doubt, my favorite moment would be beating Monmouth last year, and celebrating with our fans as they crowded our bus when we arrived on campus.

Plans after graduation?
I will likely pursue a Master's degree in Computer Science immediately after graduating from Grinnell. From there, the possibilities are endless, as I have considered almost every field from private industry computer work to government work (military/intelligence) to football coaching.

Brian Taylor Named MWC Defensive Player of the Week!

Grinnell College’s Brian Taylor ’13 has been named the Midwest Conference Football Defensive Performer of the Week.

Taylor, a 6-2, 230-pound defensive end from Andover, Kan. (Independent), recorded 3.5 sacks, just a half-sack shy of the Grinnell school record, in the Pioneers’ 17-15 victory over Lawrence University on Saturday.

He also had a team-high six tackles as Grinnell stretched its winning streak to four games, the longest for the Pioneers since the 1999 season.

With a thrilling 17-15 road victory over Lawrence University, the Pioneers have run their current winning streak to four games. The longest in program history since 1999!

Both offenses struggled to consistently gain any momentum with winds over 30 MPH blowing throughout the afternoon. Rob Seer '12 was perhaps the least affected, hauling in 2 TDs, both from non-quarterbacks (Kelsey Davis '12 and Trent Baker '15). And with those two scoring catches Seer tied and then over took Richard Wemer '99 for the Grinnell career receiving touchdowns record with 42. Congrats Rob!

Brian Taylor '13 paced the defense with 6 total tackles but 3.5 were by sack for a combined negative 21 yards. Drew Blumberg '13 also posted 5 tackles including a couple big hits and a pass breakup.

Punter Logan Granera '12, also set a school record for longest punt in Pioneer history. Granera boomed a 79 yard kick in the 1st quarter to help flip the field for the Scarlet & Black.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?
I was in the second semester of my Freshman year at Colorado College when the Board of Trustees decided to drop our football program. It was a painful time. I knew that I wanted to continue playing football, so I visited several schools to consider transferring. The guys on the team at Grinnell were absolutely amazing and I knew I wanted to be a part of this family. I still miss my teammates from Colorado College, but transferring here was the best decision I've ever made.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?
Beating Monmouth last year, 17-15. I had come from losing programs in high school and at Colorado College, and this game was the first time where I was on a team that said, "We're not putting up with losing anymore." I'm incredibly proud of helping to start a winning tradition here.

Plans after graduation?
I've worked at NFL Films and ESPN the past few summers, so I'm definitely looking to get into sports media after I graduate.

If they're from Denver, I love them.

Pioneers Run Win Streak to Three Games!

Under unseasonably warm conditions the host Grinnell Pioneers defeated the visitors from Knox 43-35 at Rosenbloom Field. It was a tightly contested game until just into the fourth quarter when the Scarlet & Black ripped off 3 straight scores in a 4 minute span to take control of the game.

Statistically, the defense was led by Ryan Creps '12 who had 12 tackles (3.5 TFL) and Andrew Clark '14 (2 INT) while the offense was paced by the two senior wide receivers, Logan Granera '12 (7 catches for 101 yards) and Rob Seer '12 (6 for 99 yards and 3 TD). In the kicking game, Max Jacobson '14 blocked his second kick of the season, this one a PAT attempt after Knox's third score.

The victory takes the Pioneers to 4-2 overall (3-2 in MWC) and it's back on the road next Saturday, at Lawrence University (1-5, 1-4 MWC) in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Grinnell Athletics is proud to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and the diversity of those in the Hispanic community at Grinnell College. Each Wednesday throughout the celebratory month, the Grinnell Athletics website will feature a Q&A with a Hispanic student-athlete. The national celebration spans September 15 – October 15 annually.

This week’s feature is on Nick Hinojosa ‘13, a football player and an art history major:

Q: What first got you interested in your sport(s)?
A: My dad’s passion for the game rubbed off on me at an early age. I was playing three sports at a very young age and I loved every moment of it. It was a way for me to connect to my pops and make a lot of friends.

Q: Besides your sport(s), what other activities do you enjoy?
A: I love writing and recording music. I hope to start working on a mixtape once the season is over.

Q: As a current student-athlete at Grinnell, what advice would you give to prospective students who are interested in participating in varsity athletics at the collegiate level?
A: Learn to manage your time and be ready to compete.

Q: Talk about your typical day while you’re in season – what does your schedule look like?
A: Mainly classes in the morning and afternoon, practice early evening, then homework, and lastly relax with some friends.

Q: How do you get focused and/or hyped before a game?
A: First thing I do is get into the Bible and read a few verses and of course listen to some music which gets me hyped.

A: The facilities are great along with the the staff and everybody is supportive in our community.

A: I usually go for the pasta or get creative with some type sandwich. And cereal is on point, cinnamon toast crunch all day.

Q: Hispanic/Latino/a culture comprises more than 20 countries/nationalities and numerous ethnicities, how would you describe your Hispanic/Latino/a identity?
A: Mexican

Q: What does your Hispanic/Latino/a heritage mean to you?
A: It’s a part of who I am. It’s something that I am proud of and it’s giving me my own swagger. My heritage allowed me to have a unique upbringing that has made me into the person I am today.

Selected as one of the best and brightest on the gridiron, Grinnell College left guard Chris Jarmon ’12 (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) has been named a candidate for The National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete Award.

Candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Jarmon is one of 127 candidates representing all levels of NCAA football, and one of only 30 from NCAA Division III.

Pioneers Beat Beloit!

Going on the road and beating the opponent on their Homecoming is always a good thing. Saturday was one of those days for the Pioneers, defeating the host Beloit Bucs 28-21.

Standout performers on offense were Cody Weber '13 who had 175 all-purpose yards and 2 TDs and Trent Baker '15 with 7 catches for 140 yards and 1 TD.

The defense had a solid all-around performance led by linebackers Jeremy Wiles '14 (6 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 TFL) and Richard Renteria '15 (6 tackles, 2 were TFL)

The win pushes the Scarlet & Black to 3-2 overall and back to 2-2 in MWC play. Knox College comes to Rosenbloom Field this Saturday after a tough 26-20 loss to Ripon.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?

Grinnell was academically the best school i was accepted to. It was an easy choice as i wanted the best education i could get.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?

My favorite Pioneer moment was our 17-15 victory over Monmouth last year. There was so much energy and enthusiasm on that field as the clock wound down and our win was assured. Beating Monmouth was a huge leap forward for our team, and this win far surpassed my last dark-horse win from high school. I knew great things would come for us after that moment.

Plans after graduation?
Nothing solid, but i have plenty of pathways i can see myself headed on. Potentially working in the state department foreign service, or alternately in environmental resource management. But i will go wherever the opportunities open up.

Favorite Professional Sports Team:
Coming from the Seattle area, I am a big Seahawks supporter.

Favorite Division I team:
I am not a huge fan of D1 football, but as a Navy brat, I love watching the Navy Midshipmen, especially in the Army-Navy game. I make it a point to see that game every year.

Favorite Song/Book/Movie/Food:
Favorite food: Pizza Margherita ... Favorite Movie: Aliens ... Favorite Book: Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card ... No favorite song as my tastes are always changing.

I am a Navy brat so I have been around the world. I was born in Japan, have lived on both US coasts, and spent three fondly remembered years living in Naples, Italy. Enjoyed some fine food there.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?

Coming out of high school, I debated going to Grinnell or going to Truman State. I chose Truman State because I thought it would be cool to play Division II football despite feeling much more comfortable on my visit to Grinnell. I soon realized the mistake I had made and as soon as I finished my first year I looked in to transferring to Grinnell. I really wish I would have come here straight out of high school because as a senior, an extra year at Grinnell seems invaluable. It is my teammates and coaches that truly make the difference here.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?

It is too difficult to choose one moment as my favorite, but watching Rob Seer drop kick a pylon in practice has to be up there.

Plans after graduation?

I plan on going to Chiropractic school upon graduation.

Pioneer quarterback Mike McCabe '13 was named Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his 7 touchdown performance in Saturday's 49-34 win over Lake Forest.

Mike completed 26 of 37 passes for 320 yards 5 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 28 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On a beautiful fall afternoon at Rosenbloom Field, in front of a terrific Family Weekend crowd, the Pioneers handled the visitors from Lake Forest 49-34.

Quarterback Mike McCabe '13 led the Pioneer offensive output

Quarterback Mike McCabe '13 had a hand in all 7 offensive touchdowns, throwing 5 and running for 2. Receivers Robert Seer '12 (11 receptions for 156 yards and 3 TDs) and Logan Granera '12 (6 for 81 yards and 2 TDs) helped the offense score more points in any game since 2001.

Safety Kelsey Davis '12 and linebacker Richard Renteria '15 led the defensive effort with 13 tackles each, while cornerback Seth Gustafson '14 had an interception and nose tackle Tom Brinkman '13 had a fumble recovery and a crucial 4th-down pass breakup.

Ripon Pulls Away From Pioneers

After leading on two different occasions in the first half and only trailing 17-14 at halftime, the Grinnell College Pioneers weren't able to stay with the Ripon Redhawks, losing 38-20. After restraining the Redhawks triple option offense to just two touchdowns in the first half, the hosts took to the air and threw more pass attempts than they had in the season's first two games combined.

Standouts for the Pioneers include safeties Drew Blumberg '13 (14 tackles) and Kelsey Davis '12 (11 tackles), wide receiver/running back Cody Weber '13 (100 yards of total offense and one touchdown), and cornerback/kick returner Andrew Clark '14 (1 INT and 55 kick return yards).

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?
Coming out of high school I had several opportunities in terms of where I could go for college, Grinnell was by far the best educational opportunity as well as one of the few I could still play football. Also I had to weigh in the opinions of my parents who agreed that Grinnell would be the best place of opportunity for me to secure my future.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?
My favorite pioneer moment would have to be when I scored the opening touchdown of the season my sophomore year.

Plans after graduation?
I plan to go to a cardio-pulmonary perfusion grad program and become a licensed perfusionist.

Favorite Professional Sports Team:
I don't really have a favorite professional team because my state doesn't have any for me to be loyal too (except for the Thunder basketball team but that is very recent), but it is definitely not any team from Dallas!

Favorite Division I team:
Boomer Sooner baby! Have to support my home state heroes! (being number one doesn't hurt their fan base either) Face it Jimmy, OK > IL

Favorite Song/Book/Movie/Food:
My favorite song at the moment is probably Drop the World by Lil Wayne & Eminem, It talks about overcoming all of the doubters and adversities in life and coming back stronger; it is inspirational in saying to pick yourself up when you get knocked down.

Favorite Course at Grinnell:
My favorite course is a toss up between Physics II and Biology 395 (virology), both courses catch my interest so there really is no clear winner.

Interesting facts about you:

Spring semester of my senior year in high school I was part of a national championship cheerleading team.

Pioneers Fall To Monmouth

Both teams observed a moment of silence in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11

Despite almost 400 yards of total offense the Pioneers couldn't keep up with the visiting Monmouth College Scots in Saturday's home opener at Rosenbloom Field, losing 61-20.

Suffering a couple key defensive injuries early, the Scots opened up a good lead very quickly and never looked back. It's on to Ripon College next Saturday to keep that road record spotless!

Since transferring to Grinnell, he's continued to provide insightful, humorous, and fresh material. His latest post, published last night, talks a bit about his summer internship at ESPN and about the start of his senior season...

I said goodbye to the wonderful employees and fellow interns at ESPN on August 5th, and the following Monday I started driving back to Iowa for camp. I was overjoyed to see my teammates again, since they are what makes the game of football truly fun.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell?

Out of all of the schools I considered, Grinnell presented me the most unique college experience. Grinnell has a great academic reputation and the best academic and athletic facilities in D3. Moreover, the school’s diverse and international focus meant I was able to stay in my hometown and develop a global perspective. The icing on the cake was the chance to continue playing football in front of my friends and family. Most importantly, Grinnell was able to make this experience very affordable for my family.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment?

Plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to live and work abroad for a few years before returning to the United States, where I plan to pursue a career in higher education administration.

Rob Seer '12 Earns MWC Player of Week Honors!

Pioneer Wide Receiver, Rob Seer '12, has earned the first MWC Offensive Player of the Year honor of 2011!

From the MWC release:
Seer caught seven passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns as Grinnell won its season opener, 31-6 over Macalester College. Among his TDs were a 5-yard catch from Trent Baker early in the fourth period and a 78-yard completion from Mike McCabe later in the period.

Pioneers Open With a W!

The visiting Grinnell Pioneers christened their 2011 season in a big way, with a 31-6 victory over Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota this afternoon.

After a scoreless 1st quarter, the guests tacked on 10 quick points just before the half using a successful onside kick sandwiched between the scores. Things were put away in the 4th, with three scoring aerial strikes, two to Rob Seer '12 and one to Cody Weber '13.

Why did you choose to attend Grinnell? Obviously Grinnell offers an education that rivals any in the nation, which was very important to me when I was deciding where to go to school. However, what set Grinnell apart from everywhere else I was looking was the guys on the team. I visited Kenyon, which essentially is the same school as Grinnell just in Ohio not Iowa, and I never truly felt welcome there. But when I visited Grinnell there was an instant connection and warm atmosphere, you knew that everyone wanted you there.

What is your favorite Pioneer football moment? My favorite football moment was my freshman year against Ripon. We had been beaten badly that day (we were shut out up to this point) but in the fourth quarter I got in, led a drive down the field and threw my first collegiate touchdown to Rob Seer. Having my first touchdown be thrown to a close friend was a pretty sweet moment.

Plans after graduation? I plan on getting a job in the field of finance, preferably as an investment consultant

The Pioneers 2011 campaign is officially underway. Players reported to campus on Thursday and with only 3 practices under our belt it's clear we are headed for a great season!

We've had plenty of fun in the first few days as well, including the annual fishing derby where safety Drew Blumberg '13 caught this 28-inch catfish!

The 3rd Annual Pioneer High School Football Camp is this June 24th and 25th!

The non-padded camp will consist of 3 sessions, including a 7-on-7 Competition, Offensive and Defensive Line Challenge, individual instruction on the fundamentals of the game, and instruction on: hang clean, bench press, vertical jump, and 40-yard dash.

Ryan Creps Study Abroad in South Africa!

Linebacker Ryan Creps '12 is studying abroad this semester in Cape Town, South Africa. We asked Ryan to update us a little bit on his experience and this is what he had to say:

After spending every winter in the snowy Midwest, I decided to take a tip from the birds and head south this winter for a semester abroad at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. As a small town Iowan, who had never left the central time zone or been on an airplane before heading to college, I have found my time in Cape Town to be quite a learning experience. Not to mention, the enrollment of UCT is 23,000, over twice the size of my hometown! However, I have yet to be overwhelmed and I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Cape Town thus far.

With the mountains and beaches each within thirty minutes of my apartment, my weekends have been filled with plenty of outdoor adventures. As midterm break is fast approaching, I have made plans to spend a week at Kruger National Park on a safari and a few days in Gaborone, Botswana, where other Grinnellians are currently studying. Likewise, over the Easter holiday, I will be spending a week with a group of friends camping and sand surfing in deserts of Namibia. I have had a blast this semester and would study abroad again if given the opportunity. However, spending the offseason thousands of miles away from my teammates has been difficult. I found an excellent gym that allows me to complete my workouts and email, Skype, and Facebook have made staying in contact with the team simple. Yet, the camaraderie developed during 6 am workouts, the competitive intensity of 7-on-7, and the constant presences of forty other guys working towards a common goal cannot be replicated by technology. Though I could stay in Cape Town forever, I am exciting to get back to Grinnell and spend the summer with my teammates, preparing for the 2011 season.

Marquis Trains for Post-Season Combines

Coming off his succesful performance in the Aztec Bowl, senior linebacker Marquis Bradley has decided to try to continue his playing career beyond his four years at Grinnell College. While it was certainly fun spending winter break not studying, exploring my meathead side at 24-Hour Fitness and dreaming about waffle crisp, I missed my friends and my teammates here at Grinnell. It’s good to be back in the swing of things, hanging out with people and simply enjoying the time between my various other collegiate commitments. The spring semester has always been one of my favorite times in college, because you spend more time bonding with your teammates off the field. I’m enjoying this offseason as much as I can, because the time I spend with my team is starting to run out.

Marquis Bradley & Tazon de Estrellas (Aztec Bowl)

Grinnell Pioneer senior Marquis Bradley played in the "Aztec Bowl" or Tazon de Estrellas in December as a part of the DIII All-Star team that competed against CONADEIP All-Star team from Mexico.

Here is the highlight video from the game. Marquis can been seen wearing #21 in the white jersey and is one of the two guys carrying the American flag as they take the field!

MWC All-Conference performer, Marquis Bradley '11, played in the Tazon de Estrellas, also known as the former Aztec Bowl as a member of the American All-Stars. The Stars and Stripes team made up of 44 Division III players beat the CONADEIP All-Stars on Saturday December 18th, by a score of 48-7. It was a great way to cap Marquis' career and his home town newspaper, The Wichita Eagle, spotlighted Bradley the week of the game.

Wichitan Marquis Bradley is a whale of a football player who dreams of playing in the NFL, a guy who works harder than almost anyone to make that dream come true, a defensive player of the year at Division III Grinnell College in Iowa, a hard- hitting linebacker with the nickname "Marquis the Beast."

But his story is more than football.

It's hopeful and uplifting. It involves a dynamic mother and male role models who couldn't resist Bradley's illuminating smile or his mother's strong work ethic and gave both the support they needed.

Eleven Pioneers Named Academic All-Conference!

After the best season in 6 years, the Grinnell College Pioneers were equally as impressive in the classroom boasting 11 MWC Academic All-Conference award winners! The entire Grinnell Athletic Department had 85 Fall Academic All-Conference athletes named pacing the rest of the conference and well ahead of Beloit's 62 honorees, which was good for 2nd most.

Congrats to all the Grinnell student-athletes to be so named, but in particular to the 11 Pioneer Football players:

Drew Blumberg '13, Mike Bogard '12, Ryan Creps '12, Ryan Fletcher '11, Clinton Follette '11, Logan Granera '12, Marc Heronemus '11, Chris Jarmon '12, Augustus Karisch '11, TJ Schaid '13, and Joe Sinnwell '12.

Coach Pedersen is 2010 MWC Coach of the Year! Pioneers Garner 7 All-MWC Honors!

The Grinnell College football team had an amazing run in the 2010 season, and that success has been reflected in the All-MWC selections.

Head Coach Jeff Pedersen ’02 (top, left) has been named MWC Coach of the Year, and linebacker Marquis Bradley ’11 (top, second from left), wide receiver Robert Seer ’12 (top, second from right) and returner Logan Granera ’13 (top, right) have been named to the All-MWC first team in voting by the league’s coaches.

Granera was also a second-team pick - at the wide receiver position - and was joined on that team by linebacker Ryan Fletcher ’11 (bottom, left), safety Marc Heronemus ’11 (bottom, second from left) and running back TJ Schaid ’13 (bottom, second from right). Offensive tackle Jake McVeigh ’11 (bottom, right) was an honorable mention pick for a team that won as many games in 2010 as the three previous Grinnell squads combined.

Under Pedersen’s guidance, the Pioneers achieved success not seen at Grinnell in quite a few years. Among them were beating Monmouth College for the first time since 2000, winning four of their first five games for Grinnell’s best start since 1999 and finishing at 6-4 for the team’s best record since 2004.

2010 Season Recap

The 2010 Grinnell Pioneers finished the season with a record of 6-4, which is the school's best record since 2004. After 5 consecutive seasons of 3 wins or less, the 2010 version of the Pioneers broke out in a big way. They won 4 of their 5 home games and despite having the smallest roster size in the conference, went on the road and defeated the two-time defending conference champions Monmouth Scots in Week 2.

Under first-year head coach Jeff Pedersen, the 2010 Pioneers were an attacking, fast, and intelligent team that bought into the three tenors of Coach Pedersen's Pioneering Spirit: VISION, COURAGE, AND CONVICTION.

There were numerous individual standout seasons, as the Pioneers had two receivers finish in the top 5 in the MWC in both receptions per game and receiving yards per game (Logan Granera '12 and Robert Seer '12). Seer also finished 2nd in the conference in scoring with 14 TDs. Granera led the MWC in All-Purpose yardage, racking up 900 return yards and 1 TD.

Defensively, the Pioneers were led by 3 seniors. Linebackers Marquis Bradley '10 and Ryan Fletcher '10 were all over the field, both finishing in the top 6 of the MWC in tackles. Bradley had 103 total, 3 sacks, and 3 INTs. Fletcher had 87 tackles, 10.5 of which were TFL. Marc Heronemus '10 led the Pioneers' secondary with 59 tackles and 10 passes defended, which was good for 5th in the MWC.

Coach Pedersen and company are already excited for the 2011 season and bringing in the next batch of Pioneers to help continue the winning at Grinnell College!

Pioneers Fall in Season Finale

The 2010 Pioneer Seniors finished their careers on Saturday afternoon

The Grinnell College football team lost its 2010 season finale Saturday, falling 40-7 at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis.

The first quarter was scoreless before the hosts tallied 27 points in the second period and 13 more in the third for a 40-0 lead.

Grinnell scored its lone touchdown at the 4:08 mark of the game when Jason Peters ’14 ran the ball in from a yard out. Logan Granera ’13 kicked the point after. The two-play drive was set up when Jeremy Wiles ’14 recovered a fumble at the Carroll 34-yard line, and Mike McCabe ’13 then completed a 33-yard pass to Robert Seer ’12.

Wiles had 15 total tackles for Grinnell, which finished 5-4 in the Midwest Conference and 6-4 in all games. Carroll is 6-3 in the MWC and 7-3 overall.

Marquis Bradley ’11 added seven tackles and Marc Heronemus ’11 and Kelsey Davis ’14 six each. McCabe completed 12 passes for 142 yards and Peters had six catches for 56 yards.

Grinnell Secures Winning Season!

The Grinnell College football team came up with a stellar effort in its final regular-season home game Saturday, and secured its first winning season since 2004 in the process with a 42-29 victory over Illinois College at Rosenbloom Field.

Illinois College entered the game in a tie for the Midwest Conference lead, but now falls to 5-3 in the league while Grinnell improves to the same record. That puts those two in a five-way tie for second place in the MWC. Grinnell is 6-3 overall and the Blueboys are 5-4.

Jason Peters ’14 (pictured) had a huge day for the Pioneers with eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Mike McCabe ’13 completed 21-of-36 aerials for 293 yards and four scores, while Logan Granera ’13 had five catches for 69 yards and a TD.

Grinnell’s defense shut down the high-octane Illinois College defense and intercepted last week’s Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week, Mitch Niekamp, three times. The Pioneers were sparked by two defenders celebrating Senior Day, Marquis Bradley ’11 and Ryan Fletcher ’11, who each had 14 tackles. Ryan Creps ’12 added two interceptions.

The Pioneers take their 6-3 record up to Wisconsin this Saturday for the 2010 finale versus Carroll University (6-3, 5-3 in MWC). The winner secures at least a share of 2nd place in the MWC and with a St. Norbert loss would earn a share of the MWC title.

Grinnell College’s Marquis Bradley ’11 has been chosen by a panel of NCAA Division III coaches to represent Team Stars & Stripes in the second annual Tázon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars).

The D-III All-Star team’s contest against the CONADEIP All-Stars from Mexico is slated for Dec. 18 at Tec de Monterrey Stadium in Toluca, Mexico.

Bradley, a 5-foot-11, 202-pound linebacker from Wichita, Kan. (Independence HS), has earned his share of honors this season. He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week once and was also tabbed a Midwest Conference Defensive Performer of the Week.

Through eight games, Bradley has team-highs of 82 tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He also has two sacks, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries for the Pioneers, who sit at 5-3 and are tied for 2nd place in the MWC.

Grinnell's Granera Named to D3Football.com Team of the Week!

For the second time this year, the Pioneers have a player named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week! After his versatile performance in the dramatic comeback against Lawrence, Logan Granera was named to the team as a Special Teams performer.

Not only did he boot a 42-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half, he also returned two kickoffs for 74 yards including a 50-yard return, punted three times and kicked off six times for a 53.3-yard average.

He also had an 18-yard touchdown catch for the final score of the game while finishing with six catches for 69 yards overall.

Grinnell College players have claimed two of the three Midwest Conference Football Players of the Week honors.

Marquis Bradley ’11 (left), a 5-11, 218-pound linebacker from Wichita, Kan., was named Defensive Player of the Week and Logan Granera ’13 (right), a 5-11, 180-pound wide receiver/kicker/kick returner from Keokuk, Iowa, was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week.

Bradley and Granera both had dominating performances in the Pioneers’ 31-17 come-from-behind win over Lawrence University Saturday.

Bradley had a coming up with a game-high 13 tackles to go along with a momentum-shifting interception and fumble recovery. He now has 75 tackles on the season.

Granera put his versatility on display against Lawrence. Not only did he boot a 42-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half, he also returned two kickoffs for 74 yards including a 50-yard return, punted three times and kicked off six times for a 53.3-yard average. It was the second time this year that Granera was named Player of the Week, having earned the honor as the Offensive Performer of the Week back on September 20 for his performance against Ripon.

The efforts of Bradley and Granera helped Grinnell rally from a 17-0 deficit against Lawrence with 31 unanswered points as the Pioneers improved to 5-2, their best start since 1998.

Big Rally Secures Fifth Win of Season!

Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field provided the stage for a phenomenal comeback as the Pioneers overcame an early three-score deficit to rally and triumph over the visiting Lawrence Vikings 31-17. The victory improved Grinnell's record to 5-2 overall and they remained tied for 2nd place in the MWC just one game behind conference leader, Ripon.

Leading the fervent rally were Mike McCabe '13, who threw 4 TDs and 240 yards, and Robert Seer '12, who hauled in 3 TDs and 113 yards on 7 catches. Defensively, Marquis Bradley '11 led the home team with 13 tackles, an INT and a fumble recovery.

Grinnell Falls to Knox

Committing 8 turnovers and 11 penalties, the Pioneers lost to the Knox Prairie Fire 31-21 on Saturday on a hot October day in Galesburg, IL. The win drops Grinnell to 4-2 on the season and at 3-2 in MWC play, still just one game back of league leaders Ripon and Carroll with four to play.

The game got off to a great start as the offense took the first series down and scored on a Mike Bogard '12 to Kelsey Davis '12 17-yard strike. From that point forward however, nothing went right for the visiting Pioneers. Trailing 17-7 at halftime, the Pioneers had plenty of fight in them as they cut the lead to 3 points twice in the 2nd half, to 17-14 on a Robert Seer '12 28 yard catch and run with 5:30 left in the 3rd quarter and then again cut the lead to 24-21 on a Jason Peters '14 two yard scoring plunge with 13:00 minutes left in the game.

Knox proved up to the challenge and played the better game on Saturday, now it's time to regroup and get back to playing Pioneer football! With energy, pride, and passion!

Next game brings the Vikings of Lawrence University to Rosenbloom Field this Saturday for a 1 pm kickoff!

Jumping out to a 24-7 halftime lead was plenty for Grinnell on Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom field as the Pioneers beat the visiting Beloit Buccaneers 24-21. Grinnell now sits at 4-1 overall and 3-1 in MWC and is tied for 2nd place in the MWC standings trailing only the Ripon Red Hawks. Grinnell is off to their best start since the 1999 season.

The game was a balanced affair aside from the Pioneers collecting 4 turnovers defensively and only giving away 1 on offense. Colton Feller '14 had an interception and a fumble recovery, while Ryan Fletcher '11 had a pick off a batted ball by defensive end Matt John '12. Marc Heronemus '11 also had a fumble recovery and 3 pass break-ups.

Offensively, the men in black were led by running back T.J. Schaid '13, collecting 1 TD and 89 yards on 23 carries. Schaid's help in pass protection also kept quarterback Mike Bogard '12 from being sacked and allowed receiver Logan Granera '12 to haul in another big day with 11 catches for 126 yards.

Marquis Bradley Named to D3Football.com's Team of the Week!

With Saturday’s impressive defensive performance against Lake Forest College, Grinnell College’s Marquis Bradley ’11 has earned national attention.

Bradley, a 5-foot-11, 202-pound linebacker from Wichita, Kan. (Independence HS), was named to the D3football.com national Team of the Week. He recorded a team-high 11 tackles, including two sacks, and an interception in Grinnell’s 41-20 victory over the Foresters.

For the season, Bradley leads the Pioneers, and is second in the MWC, with 45 tackles (11.2 per game), he also has two sacks, 4.5 TFL, 1 INT, 2 PBU, 3 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery.

Saturday's victory pushed Grinnell to 3-1 on the season, the Pioneers’ best start since the 2000 season.

Mike Bogard Named MWC Player of the Week

For the second week in a row, the Grinnell College football team has had the Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week.

Mike Bogard ’12, a 6-foot, 196-pound quarterback from Brookfield, Wis. (Brookfield Central HS), earned the honor this week.

Bogard completed 26-of-37 passes for 394 yards and four touchdowns in Grinnell’s 41-20 victory over Lake Forest College. Grinnell’s 478 total passing yards (Mike McCabe also had 84 yards) is the most by the Pioneers since a 510-yard effort against Lawrence University in 1994, and their 570 yards of total offense is the most since a 2003 game against Macalester College.

Pioneers Win Big Road Game!

Posting Grinnell's highest total offensive output since 2003 and the school's highest passing yardage since 1994, the Pioneers rolled to a 41-20 win on the road Saturday against conference rival Lake Forest. Grinnell improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in MWC play.

Grinnell out gained the Foresters by almost 200 yards and had 478 yards of their 570 through the air. Quarterback Mike Bogard '12 led the way throwing for 390 yards on 26-37 passing and threw for 4 touchdowns. Receivers Logan Granera '12, 8 catches for 170 yards and 2 TDs, and Robert Seer '12, 9 catches 112 yards and 2 TDs, were the favorite targets of the Pioneer quarterbacks. Rookies Jason Peters '14 and Augustus Karisch '11 also recorded their first career touchdowns.

Defensively, the Pioneers were led by senior captain Marquis Bradley '11 who had 11 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 INT, and 1 pass break-up. First-year Colton Feller '14 also had 9 tackles, .5 for a loss, and a fumble recovery. As a unit the Black Swarm had 10 TFL, 3 sacks, got 2 turnovers and held Lake Forest to 6-for-19 combined on 3rd and 4th down conversion attempts.

The Pioneers are back at home this Saturday to take on Beloit College (2-2, 2-1 MWC) in a big conference battle.

ESPN.com blogger Ryan McGee highlighted the Pioneers upset over the Monmouth Scots in a recent blog post.

After last week's blog when I wondered aloud where James Madison's win over Virginia Tech ranked among the all-time greatest upsets, I received an e-mail from reader Brian Taylor, who made a pretty good argument that the Dukes might not have even had the biggest upset that weekend.

On Sept. 11 Grinnell (Iowa) College knocked off fellow NCAA Division III (non-scholarship) foe Monmouth (Ill.) College 17-15. That doesn't seem like a big deal until you consider that in their previous three meetings the Pioneers had been beaten by the Fighting Scots by a combined score of 170-0 (2007: 42-0, 2008: 69-0, 2009: 59-0). According to Taylor, Grinnell sports a 48-man roster, multiple two-way players, and carried a preseason ranking of 214th out of 238 D3 schools. Monmouth, led by the '09 D3 Player of the Year, QB Alex Tanney, was ranked 17th. I don't care what game you're playing, if you beat a guy ranked 197 spots ahead of you, that is a pretty nice upset.

Logan Granera Named MWC Player of the Week

Wide Receiver Logan Granera '12 was named the Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week today after grabbing 9 balls for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns in Saturday's game versus Ripon College. Granera also had 140 kick return yards and leads the Pioneers on the season with 19 catches for 350 yards and has the second-most touchdowns with 3.

Pioneers Fall to Ripon RedHawks

A battle of unbeatens between Grinnell and Ripon on Saturday led to one of the more interesting gameday experiences witnessed at Rosenbloom Field. First, Head Coach Jeff Pedersen left campus shortly after the team breakfast to be with his wife who had gone into labor and later delievered their second child, a girl Nora Jane. Obviously, a big congratulations is in order for the Pedersen family!

Without their leader, the Pioneers struggled in the first half falling behind 27-0 before halftime. As soon as the 2nd quarter ended, a storm system rolled into the area and the game was delayed for over 2 and 1/2 hours. When we finally got the third quarter started it was almost 5:00pm and we quickly regained our composure and fought back into the game with three touchdowns in the 3rd quarter before eventually falling 48-21.

Individual highlights include wide receiver and return specialist Logan Granera '12 racking up 336 all-purpose yards (195 of those were of the receiving variety) and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Mike McCabe '13 came in in the second half and threw for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 15 completions. He also ran for 41 yards and a TD on 7 carries. Defensively, linebacker Marquis Bradley '11 had 13 tackles and fellow linebacker Jeremy Wiles '14 had 11, 8 of which were solo. Cornerback Andrew Clark '14 also added an INT.

The Pioneers beat Monmouth!

After opening the 2010 seasons with a win over Macalester, the Pioneers got another big win this past weekend! We played two-time defending conference champion Monmouth and beat them 17-15 at their place. We hadn’t beaten them since 2000, and they had won 21 straight conference games!

We took the opening kickoff and put together a 15 play touchdown drive that used up 6:40 of the first quarter. Our next score came in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Nick Hinojosa. The run capped a 5 play, 70 yard drive. The big play of the drive was 41 yard pass from Mike Bogard to Robert Seer. The score gave us a 14-0 lead, which we took into halftime.

Coming out of the half, our defense forced a three and out, and the offense launched a 13 play drive that used up another 6:32 of game time. Unfortunately we were only able to get a field goal out of the drive, but that would prove to be enough.

The defense came up huge the entire game. On Monmouth’s first drive of the game we stopped them twice for short gains on running plays. On third down Coach Martinez called the perfect blitz and senior Ryan Fletcher was able to get the big hit on their quarterback. He ended up coming out of the game after that play, and he never returned. Monmouth’s offense took a while to adjust to a new quarterback, and our defense kept bringing the pressure all game.

Monmouth eventually closed the gap to 17-15 late in the fourth quarter, and had the ball with a chance to win the game. The defense came up clutch again however, when Marquis Bradley forced a fumble with under five minutes, and on the next drive they stopped Monmouth on fourth down with less than one minute remaining.

This was a great victory for our program and for our players. All the hard work of the past few years has begun to pay off, but nobody is satisfied with our 2-0 start. We know that we have the potential to win every game left on our schedule, but we have the potential to lose them all as well. There are no guarantees for this team, so we’ll just keep working hard and try to make our own breaks!

Pioneer Offensive Lineman Chris Jarmon was interviewed by D3Football.com about his experiences as a student-athlete, life at Grinnell College, and his own personal blog (www.thed3experience.com). D3: Is the D-III experience all you expected?
CJ: The D-III experience is everything I could have hoped for and more. I know I've certainly had a little bit of a bumpier ride than some of the other athletes out there, but it's been an amazing learning and growing experience. The relationships and leadership skills I've developed while playing Division III football are invaluable, and I'm lucky to have been allowed to play the game I love at such a competitive level while still getting an excellent education.

D3: You've played one year at Colorado College and one at Grinnell. How do the programs compare?
CJ: For me, both the programs at Colorado College and at Grinnell have had a wonderful family atmosphere with a great support system among teammates, coaches and parents. Both programs also put a competitive squad on the field, even though I've experienced only losing seasons so far. Where I feel the programs tend to differ is institutional support. At Colorado College, I feel that the College did not provide us with adequate tools and support to succeed, and I was shown how poorly they support intercollegiate athletics when they decided to cut the football program. I admire Grinnell as an institution for supporting their football program in every aspect, and for standing behind us no matter how tough things get on or off the field. I've found that it's much easier to carry out my daily life as a D-III football player when I don't have to worry about what's going on behind closed doors.

D3: I notice you said 'athletes' instead of 'student-athletes.' Do you think players care about the buzzwords and labels from the NCAA and media?
CJ: I do think players care, to an extent. However, at Grinnell we don't get too wrapped up in making sure people know we're students first, because people in this community already know that. Grinnell is an intense academic environment, so there's no question that our education comes first. I suppose at this point I'm used to referring to myself as an athlete since my presence here infers that I'm looking to get an education. I think some other D-III players might agree that those buzzwords and labels are meant more for players in higher NCAA divisions where there is a greater emphasis on preparing for professional sports.

D3: Having seen almost 20 different teams up close the past two years, what does Grinnell need to do to contend for conference titles?
CJ: I could hide behind my previous answer and say that our difficulty in finding athletes who are also academically and socially suitable for this particular environment is what holds us back from being a top team in the Midwest Conference. Having competed against almost 20 different teams, including D3football.com top 10 and top 5 teams, I've found that depth helps quite a bit, and we don't have much of it. However, our head coach Jeff Pedersen won a MWC championship here in his freshman year (1998) without much depth, and I don't think the environment at Grinnell or in the MWC as a whole has changed too much since then. All we need is a group of players and coaches like that 1998 team that collectively buys into the head coach's philosophy and believes that winning consistently is possible despite whatever disadvantages we think we may have. It's an incredibly simple, yet incredibly difficult thing to do.

D3: What's the most unique facet of game day on Grinnell's campus?
CJ: The most unique facet of our game day is our seating. We don't have a track surrounding our field, so all of our fans are very close to the action. In addition to filling the bleachers, we have rowdy students covering the grass along the sidelines, about 2 yards from the field itself, which makes for a very fun and intense game atmosphere.

D3: Is there a game the fans or players get up for more than any other?
CJ: Because of the way our conference is set up, there aren't too many big rivalries among our member schools. The games we get fired up for the most tend to be Knox and Lake Forest, because we've had very competitive games with them in recent years.

D3: What made you decide to write a blog about your time in Division III?
CJ: I've been focused on pursuing a career in sports media since a young age, and I was the sports editor for my high school paper. I noticed that no other players were really doing anything quite like it, and I thought that with my training and career aspirations I could put out decent quality content on a semi-regular basis and have some fun with it. Being a Division III football player is -- in my opinion -- an experience unlike anything else in college, so I figured other people might like to read about what it's like. I thought it might be something that would give me a little bit of a niche, and so far I believe it has.

D3: Has anyone at either school ever asked you to stop, or stop using Twitter?
CJ: Surprisingly, no one has ever asked me to stop, or to retract any content I've published. During my freshman year, I was terrified of writing about something that should be kept out, but I realized that I tend to have a pretty good filter for what shouldn't be on the internet. As the years have gone by, I've started to loosen up and enjoy it a little more, and the coaches and players have responded in kind. Especially here at Grinnell, everyone seems to embrace the uniqueness of it, and my teammates like it whenever they get a "shout-out" on the blog or on Twitter.

D3: What's the most interesting interaction you've had with a fan or reader online?
CJ: I actually get a lot of questions from high school kids and their parents about everything from training to recruiting. It surprises me how personal their questions are, since to them I'm essentially a complete stranger. The most interesting email I've ever gotten was probably one from the mother of a high school football player. Her son had been kicked off the team, and she wanted to know what he should do to get back on the team. I thought it was strange that the parent asked me about this and not the player, but I found it especially strange that she thought I would be an expert on the situation. I wrote a long and thoughtful response but I never heard back, so it must have been the wrong kind of advice.

D3: What has it been like working at NFL Films the past two summers?
CJ: Working at NFL Films the past two summers has been truly amazing. In addition to doing a lot of hands-on work for the NFL Network, I've gotten the chance to meet plenty of high-profile players, coaches and members of the media, which is important for my career path. It's been a blessing to have had such a great summer job.

D3: Did you pick up anything football-wise?
CJ: The show I work for, "NFL Playbook," is a very technical football show, so I've definitely learned a lot more about the nuts and bolts of the game from editing segments for the show.

Pioneers Open 2010 With Win!

On a terrific afternoon for college football, the Grinnell College Pioneers filled the stands across from their new $90 million athletic facility and promptly went out and beat the Macalester Scots 45-35. The game started off with a bang when the Pioneer defense stymied the Scots on a 4th and 1 from the Grinnell 37. Junior receiver Logan Granera and the Pioneer offense weren't to be out done though, with Granera taking a screen 63 yards for a touchdown on the very next play and the lead was never relinquished.

Game highlights included the defense getting 4 turnovers (one INT, one fumble, and 2 on downs) while the offense didn't turn the ball over once all afternoon. Wide Receiver Robert Seer '12 tied a school record with 4 touchdowns, three of which came from fellow junior quarterback Mike Bogard. The 45 points scored is the most scored by a Grinnell team since 2004 and the most in a season opener since the MWC Championship season of 1998.

IT'S GAME WEEK! We open our 2010 schedule this Saturday at home against Macalester College from St. Paul, Minnesota. Camp is officially over and was a great start to our season, but now it's time to focus on the Scots and continue this great start to a great year!

We are off to a great start, having now passed a week into our 2010 season and training camp. We have stayed relatively healthy and have been working hard to make that next step to the top of the conference. But perhaps the highlight so far, at least off the field, was the fishing derby where Ryan Fletcher '11 caught the biggest fish, a bass measuring 17". Check it out!

Micah Johnson is the newest member of the Grinnell College Football coaching staff. He will be coaching up the wide receivers, tight ends, and quarterbacks and we are excited to have a coach of Coach Johnson's background as a part of the Pioneer Football program and are looking forward to him being a part of our success. Coach Johnson is originally from Hawaii but later moved to Prescott, Arizona. He went to South Dakota State University and played Wide Receiver for 4 years and graduated in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. For the past three years since attending SDSU, he played football in the CFL for the British Columbia Lions in 2008 for a season and in the NFL on the practice squads of the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 and most recently with the Cincinnati Bengals.

New Running Backs' Coach!

James Rosenbury II was recently hired to be Grinnell College's new running backs'. We are excited to have a coach of Coach Rosenbury's caliber as a part of the Pioneer Football program and are looking forward to him being a part of our success. Read more about Coach Rosenbury below!

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, James ventured east where he attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. During his four years at Case Western, James was a two time UAA All-Conference running back graduating in 2007 with a BA in sociology.

Following his undergraduate studies, James took a position at his alma mater coaching running backs while also working for a small book company in Cleveland as a project manager. In his three years with Case Western the team compiled a 31-3 record that included three consecutive UAA conference championships and three straight NCAA Division III playoff appearances highlighted by the first playoff victory in school history during the 2007 season. Also during his tenure at Case Western, James had three different running backs named to the UAA All-Conference team and was also recognized as part of the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

“I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to coach at a school of Grinnell’s caliber. I am looking forward to the challenge of restoring Pioneer Football back to the forefront of the Midwest Conference and helping young student athletes excel on and off the field.”

High School Camp 2010

On July 23rd and 24th, Grinnell College will be hosting our 2nd Annual High School Pioneer Football Camp. This is a fully-padded camp where rising freshmen through seniors can come practice and play against student-athletes from around the country and be evaluated by the Pioneer coaching staff.

Grinnell Hires New Defensive Coordinator

Jason Martinez was recently hired to be Grinnell College's new defensive coordinator. We are excited to have a coach of Coach Martinez's caliber as a part of the Pioneer Football program and are looking forward to him being a part of our success. Read more about Coach Martinez below!

A Michigan native, Jason Martinez played all four years and earned his bachelor’s degree at Albion College (Mich.) in 2005 and is currently working towards finishing his master’s degree.

Martinez coached for one year at his alma mater in 2005. As assistant defensive line and special teams coach, Martinez helped Albion win the MIAA Championship and a berth to the NCAA DIII Playoffs. He also helped coach two All-MIAA defensive linemen.

After Albion, Coach Martinez joined Bemidji State as the defensive line coach as well as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the program. During his time, Bemidji posted the nation’s top run defense at the NCAA Division II level in 2006 and earned top rankings in sacks and interceptions as well. In 2007, BSU posted a top-five finish in the nation versus the run. In his two years, he oversaw the development of a Preseason All-American, NSIC Defensive Player of the Year and All-NSIC Conference defensive tackle as well as a pair of All-NSIC Conference defensive ends.

After two seasons at Bemidji State, he went on to coach the defensive line and special teams at Illinois College. For two seasons, he coached an All-MWC defensive lineman and an All-Academic MWC defensive lineman before accepting the defensive coordinator and linebacker’s job at Grinnell College this past spring.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to coach in the Midwest Conference as the defensive coordinator of a team that I believe has all the right opportunities for student-athletes. I look forward to the season and helping restore the excellence of Pioneer Football on and off the field.”

Natatorium Dedication

On Saturday, June 5, Grinnell College will dedicate its new state-of-the-art recreation and athletic center designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli and Sasaki Associates. The $70 million natatorium and fieldhouse completes Phase II of a two-part project that is considered among the best in Division III athletics and recreation. Phase II connects seamlessly underground to the $20 million Phase I completed in 2005 that features Darby Gym, home of the Pioneer basketball teams, and a fitness center.

The dedication program will include remarks by Pelli about the vision for the facility, President Russell Osgood on naming the facility, and audience participation in transferring water from the old pool to the new 50 meter pool.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sat., June 5.

Two-Sport Athletes

One of the many advantages to Division III athletics is the opportunity for more student-athletes to enjoy competing in more than one sport at the collegiate level. We had 11 guys on last fall's roster that are playing two-sports this year. Four are currently playing baseball while 7 others are members of the track and field team. Today we'll highlight those four football-baseball guys, and later in the week we'll focus on the track and field athletes.

Chad Christoff '10, Ryan Fletcher '11, Mike Bogard '12, and Brian Taylor '13 are all enjoying huge success this spring with the Pioneer baseball team jumping out to an 8-0 start in MWC play and 17-11 overall.

Christoff is a relief pitcher and has the second most appearances on the team and has held opposing hitters to a .213 average. Only giving up 10 hits, he has 2 saves and 4 strikeouts.

Fletcher has been rotating in and out of the starting lineup as a first baseman/designated hitter starting 13 of the team's 28 games. Currently he has the 6th highest batting average on the team at .326, while driving in 7 runs, stealing 2 bases and only committing 2 errors in 116 chances at first base.

Bogard has just been cleared to resume full activity after rupturing 3 ligaments in his knee in a football game this fall. He is slowly working himself back into pitching shape, and might be able to pitch for the Pioneers down the stretch.

Taylor serves as both a pitcher and back-up catcher for the baseball squad. He leads the team in ERA, with a spot-free 0.00 and is allowing opposing hitters only a .200 batting average.

The opportunity for these guys to play two sports at the collegiate level is an experience they'll never forget. Bogard says "There is absolutely no substitute for the camaraderie and friendships developed through sports, and being involved with multiple teams facilitates these one-of-a-kind interactions." Sharing similar sentiments about his teammates, Christoff said, "The benefits of playing two sports at the next level extend beyond the fact that I didn't have to give up playing one of the games I loved, but manifest themselves off the field in a way that I could never have imagined."
